Introduction

Over the last few decades, the new discipline
of Sustainability Science (SS) has made a phenomenal rise in knowledge
production, research and publications as well as the development of new
academic programs and creation of centers and scientific communities, networks
and organizations. With pressing environmental issues in  the 21st century, SS has been considered
an influential discipline and important subject of intellectual inquiry that
deserve support from the academy and scientific communities worldwide in finding
solutions to global problems such as climate change, environmental degradation
and biodiversity loss. A critical educational gap exists in educational
resources and published books for use by students and researchers in Sustainability
Science across the globe. What is needed is a reference or edited collection on
a) research trends in SS to provide the current direction and focus of the new
discipline, and b) the science for sustainability- to support through knowledge
production, sustainability practices, policies and social transformation. In
view hereof, the editors seek original, previously unpublished essays on
research projects by authors concerned with intellectual and scientific inquiry
into thematic areas such as low carbon emissions and sustainable energy;
indigenous knowledge and nature-based solutions toward sustainability;
environmental evaluation for urban sustainability; and building Sustainability Science
as a new discipline. Proposals for a book Chapter may include, but not limited
to work that transcends intellectual boundaries within Sustainability Science.
Contributors from the scientific and scholarly community may approach the topic
from disciplinary, transdisciplinary, interdisciplinary and disciplinary
perspectives such as geography, conservation biology, natural resource
management, ecology, water resource science, environmental studies and
environmental science.

Objective

                This
publication aims to be an accessible reference on current sustainability
research for academics, researchers, practitioners, students and policy makers
in the rapidly growing new discipline of Sustainability Science. Since
the discipline reflects virtually many fields from environmental science to
economics and physical sciences, this burgeoning discipline can offer the
latest insights into the global research landscape underpinning the science of
sustainability. Undoubtedly, this is a very wide subject and can be viewed from
diverse perspectives. The idea is to get together the international, interdisciplinary,
transdisciplinary and cross-sector collaboration in the context of the science
of sustainability. With an
objective for global sustainability education, the edited volume is a concise
and authoritative book that will fill the crucial and unmet need for
educational materials that integrates  theoretical foundations, methodological basis
and practice in the science of sustainability. This product focuses on
intellectual, scientific and educational influences of the new academic
discipline of Sustainability Science. The target is to increase accessibility
and use of scientific knowledge among academic and non-academic audiences as it
assembles the wisdom and insights from up-to-date scholarship and advances in
the new discipline.

Target Audience

A
challenge to be addressed is to balance scholarship reflecting theory and
practice with current research, given the fundamental demand for pedagogy, research
and practice in sustainability science. Scientists, academics, researchers,
science philosophers, environmental managers, ecologists, technology developers
and others who make decisions and take actions toward building sustainability
will find this text useful in furthering their research exposure, pedagogy and
practice.  This volume aims to provide a
highly accessible format with a wide range of concise and excellent Chapters offering
pedagogical help to academics, practitioners and students. It can become an
invaluable text for environmental sustainability/sustainability science
programs including courses such as the ‘Introduction to Sustainability Science’
at the undergraduate level, or as source of readings; or discussion materials
for training/professional development. The edited collection addresses the
teaching and learning gaps by providing Chapters that outline diverse
conceptualizations, interpretations and theoretical debates and approaches to
sustainability science. Those involved in research and practice, or interested
in the methodology, applications, approaches and issues and developments will
be academically informed of the theoretical and methodological advances in the
science of sustainability.
