The 2017 CASID Institutional Membership Prize

The CASID Institutional Membership Prize is open to any student, graduate or undergraduate, of a university holding institutional membership in CASID (See list of Institutional Members .).

The CASID Institutional Membership Prize is awarded annually to the best original essay by a student in the area of international development studies. The Prize includes $1000 cash and consideration of the essay in the regular editorial process of the Canadian Journal of Development Studies (CJDS).

To assist in assessing the essays submitted, the following guidelines have been adapted from those used by the Canadian Journal of Development Studies.

Guidelines for Submissions

  • Submitters must be a registered student at
  • The student must be the sole author of the paper submitted.
  • Submissions may be considered for presentation at the CASID Annual Conference if the author plans to participate in the conference (at his or her own expense).

Editorial Guidelines

  • Ensure that your article is no longer than 9000 words and is submitted on double-spaced pages.
  • Include a cover page stating the title of the article and author’s name. Do not put identifying information on the rest of the article, as the cover page is removed for the review process, which is anonymous.
  • Include an introduction, a conclusion, and a bibliography or list of references.
  • Print on one side of the paper only (letter size, 8.5 x 11) with a margin of at least 1 inch all around. If using A4 size paper please leave a 2-inch margin at the bottom.
  • Double space and left align text (leaving a ragged right margin) throughout.
  • Language should be respectful of diversity and difference.
  • Check for grammar and spelling errors before submission.

Essays not meeting the basic editorial guidelines may not be assessed by the Prize Committee. Detailed editorial guidelines will be provided on request, or view at the CJDS web site at .
