Call for Nominations: CASID Executive Committee

Mon, 02/15/2010 - 12:51 | casid

The CASID Executive Committee requests nominations for four positions on the CASID Executive Council: Vice-President, Treasurer, and two Member-at-Large positions. Elections will be held via electronic online poll during the month of April and the results announced at the Annual General Meeting, to be held during the 2010 CASID Annual Conference at Concordia University, Montreal, May 31st to June 2nd.

The CASID Bylaws require that any candidate must be a member in good standing and be of at least 18 years of age. All members in good standing of the Association are encouraged to stand for nomination. We particularly encourage people with experience related to an academic journal to stand for election, because of the change currently underway in governance of the Association’s journal, the Canadian Journal of Development Studies. We also encourage francophones to apply, to contribute towards ensuring the quality of the French language journal materials and raising the profile of CASID within francophone international development circles.

Nominees for the Vice President must have already served on the Executive Council (either currently or in the past). The Vice President will normally serve for one year and then become President, also for a one year term, after which s/he can be re-elected. The Treasurer must have been a member of the Executive Council prior to, or during the year in which he/she is nominated and shall serve for two years after election by the membership. Members-at-large are elected for a three year term.

The normal duties of a CASID Executive Council member are to attend 2 meetings per year. One meeting is held during the CASID conference in May/June held in conjunction with the Canadian Federation of the Humanities and Social Sciences Congress, and the second is held in late September/early October in Ottawa. There may also be the occasional teleconference if there are issues to discuss in between meetings. Other possible duties include working on the Regional Events or Development Forum; the nominations committee; and other sub-committees as required. Duties are distributed fairly evenly between members according to experience and interest, and are not onerous (a couple of hours per month is the normal time spent on CASID EC activities). Duties of the Treasurer include the collection and safekeeping of the funds of the organization, the formulation and distribution of financial and other reports relating to the conduct of the business of the organization prior to the general meeting, and other such duties delegated to the office by the President and the Executive Council.

If you are interested in standing for election, please email your nomination to casid@casid-acedi.ca. The nomination should consist of a brief biographical statement and a paragraph about what you would like to contribute to CASID.

Nominations must be received by March 15, 2010.

If you have any questions about the process or the duties, please contact support@casid-acedi.ca. If you have ideas about possible candidates, also please contact me and I can follow up to ensure that possible candidates have all of the information required to make a decision about standing for election.

Thank you for your support and contributions to the association!
