CASID 2010 Conference Program

Mon, 03/01/2010 - 15:09 | casid

Dear CASID members and sympathisers,

You will find enclosed the CASID 2010 Conference preliminary program. This year's program boasts three keynote speakers and over 60 sessions. Many sessions will be cross listed in other associations' programs but this is not yet indicated in this version of the program. As you will see, the program is not complete as the following panels still require a chair and a discussant:

  • Environmental governance and justice in development
  • Education, development and globalization
  • Gender and development issues in Africa
  • Comparing the Perceptions of teachers and students on Education reform
  • Gender and livelihood issues in Iran, Bangladesh and Cameroon
  • Sustainable development in the post-Copenhagen era
  • Gender and Environment
  • Development and the business sector
  • Gender and development in Central and Southeast Asia
  • Water and development issues
  • Security and development in fragile states
  • Development theories and models in Latin America
  • Developpement, l'environnement et les OMD en Afrique
  • Development and Communication
  • Grassroots environmental initiatives in Brazil, Indonesia and Cameroon
  • Canadian NGOs and development in Africa
  • Indigenous issues in Latin America
  • Critical analyses of development and globalization
  • Education and development in Africa
  • Rural issues in development
  • Human rights, international law and justice
  • Peace building and development
  • Ruling and development strategies in Southeast Asia and the Caribbean
  • Aid effectiveness
  • Community and family in development
  • Participation, development and governance
  • Development in Afghanistan
  • Micro-economic issues in development

If you are interested in being a chair or discussant for one of these panels, please write me ASAP.

Other conference issues at hand:

1) To present at or attend the conference you must be registered at the CFHSS congress. The early bird reduced rate ends on April 1st. This can be done online at www.congress2010.ca.  You must register for the congress as well as the CASID conference. You can also buy ticket to the CASID banquet which will take place the evening of June 1st at the Montreal Spanish Club. We are proud to have the Rwandan band Papa Zon as entertainment.

2) Accommodations can also be taken care of through the CFHSS website. CASID has reserved a block of rooms at McGill residence and you can mention CASID when making reservations. I have also recently discovered a reasonable hotel that does not appear on the CFHSS website. Quality Inn (www.choicehotels.ca) is three blocks from Concordia and is about half of the price of hotels listed by the CFHSS and it offers a free shuttle from the airport. If you are a CAA member it is even less expensive. I would recommend to all delegates to book their reservations now.

3) I will send out the travel grant information this Friday to all those who have applied for it.

4) You must be a member to present at the conference and to receive a travel grant. To register please consult the CASID website.

5) For grad students: The deadline for the Kari Levitt-Polanyi Prize Competition is March 19. Please consult the CASID website for more details.

6) Presentation confirmations were sent out by email a couple of weeks ago. If you have not confirmed the presentation of your abstract, please do so immediately or your name will not appear on the final version of the programme.

If you have any questions, please feel free to write me.

Regards,

Charmain Levy

Polanyi Prize Competition

Wed, 01/06/2010 - 14:35 | casid

Dear CASID members and sympathizers,

Happy new year to all!

I am sending out the guidelines for the 2010 Polanyi Prize Competition. I encourage faculty to send it out to their students. The deadline this year is March 19th.

Othewise, the panel and abstract proposals are presently being evaluated by our conference evaluation committee. I will be writing the proposers by the end of the month to confirm the presentation of their paper/panel at the conference.

Believe it or not, I have already booked the banquet hall. Since Concordia cannot offer space for banquets, this year it will be at the Montreal Spanish Club and CASID will organize a joint banquet with the Environmental Studies Association of Canada. My LAC, Eleonore is working on the entertainment.

Sincerely,

Charmain Levy, Ph.D.

2010 CASID Conference Keynote Speakers Announced

Thu, 11/26/2009 - 13:23 | casid

Jean-Pierre Olivier de Sardan

Anthropologue

The Canadian Association for the Study of International Development (CASID) graciously invites you to participate at its 2010 meeting, as part of the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences Congress, at Concordia University. Academics (faculty and students), practitioners, the policy making community, NGOs and community groups are all welcome to attend and participate actively.

This conference aims at exploring a large range of issues that include poverty, the environment, inequity, exclusion, violence, human rights, agriculture, urbanism, health and education. The Conference annually gathers IDS theoreticians and practitioners with an interest in understanding and explaining these issues from an IDS perspective. We particularly seek to include delegates from different disciplines and sub-disciplines – political sciences, anthropology, sociology, economics, women’s studies and geography. CASID expects this conference will stimulate a critical, democratic and constructive dialogue among its participants. As such, we encourage you to submit paper and panel proposals relevant to the theme of this conference.
