The Montreal Development Forum organised by CASID featured three presentations. The one by Anthony O’Malley focused on and reviewed the major schools of thought and development policy associated with the poverty reduction strategies (PRS) formulated at the close of the previous decade. He identified four main schools of thought, each with its pros and cons in terms of understanding the poverty problematic and policy implications.

On the other hand the presentation prepared by Darcy Tetreault focuses on the diverse pathways available to the poor: exiting (outmigration), agriculture (farming), development (assistance) and pluriactive, with reference to the livelihood strategies pursued by many if not most of the rural poor,...

When world leaders met at the Summit of 2000 to approve the Millennium Declaration they laid the basis for the Millennium Development Goals. Some observers were skeptical about the scope and ambition of the MDGs. Nonetheless in the following years they became a useful means to measure global progress in tackling poverty in its various dimensions, to motivate people to get involved, and to hold governments and international organizations to account. We would like to welcome you to the first issue of Development Forum. It was put together in April 2008, based upon a very exciting Special Panel on Afghanistan that took place at the CASID Annual Conference in Saskatoon in June 2007. In our request for contributions, the participants were advised to use the Report by the Independent Panel on Canada’s Future Role in Afghanistan (a.k.a. the Manley Report) as a point of reference for writing their short articles.
