CASID Member Receives CFHSS Award for Research

Congratulations to CASID Member Christina Clark-Kazak for her recent receipt of the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences (CFHSS)' Aid to Scholarly Publications subvention for her book Recounting MIgration: Political Narratives of Congolese Young People in Uganda

About the Work

Millions of citizens from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have been killed or displaced during decades of political corruption and military conflict. Many forced migrants are young people, who are often seen either as passive victims or as radicalized and amoral child soldiers perpetuating the cycle of violence. Recounting Migration refutes these stereotypes by presenting young Congolese refugees' nuanced understanding of the complex power relations that affect their everyday lives. Christina Clark-Kazak, a former international aid worker, uses extensive interviews done in Kampala and Kyaka II refugee settlement, Uganda, to present the narratives of ten young people living as refugees. Their accounts reveal both political awareness and individual agency in everyday and extraordinary circumstances. The author shows how refugee youth seek to influence decision-making processes in families, communities, and at policy levels through formal and informal mechanisms, as well as through non-political channels such as education and music. She juxtaposes their interpretations of the situations with the discourse and bureaucracy of international aid organizations, showing the sometimes radical differences between these perspectives. Clark- Kazak not only provides insight into the politics of labelling but offers recommendations for future research, policy, and programs for refugee young people. A remarkable and compelling look at the lives of young refugees, Recounting Migration challenges stereotypes by giving these migrants a long-overdue opportunity to speak for themselves.

Call for Proposals - CASID Regional Events 2011-2012

For the past four years, the Canadian Association for the Study of International Development (CASID) has invited its members across Canada to submit proposals to organize CASID-sponsored Regional Events focused on international development. The purpose of this initiative is threefold: to promote the study of international development across Canada, to increase CASID’s profile in the region, and to attract new members to CASID. Events should aim to bring faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, and development practitioners together to share knowledge, research topics and experience in international development. This year, CASID will support at least two regional events, from different Canadian regions. Accepted proposals will qualify for up to $5,000 of funding from CASID, to cover logistic costs and/or speaker fees.

Proposals should consider the following:

  • Events must be considered a CASID initiative and promote CASID’s profile – steps should be taken to have a representative from CASID at the event, and event organizers must be registered members in good standing with CASID
  • Events should include participants of more than one university in the region and have the involvement of both faculty and students. Where possible, development practitioners and policy makers should be included in the event

Dear CASID members and sympathizers,

First, let me welcome you into a new academic year.

Second, let me remind you that the CJDS has produced its first issue under Routledge. Our editorial team worked through the backlog last year and manuscripts are now being processes at a normal rate. For those of you who did not attend the 2011 CASID conference, we have a new website and are welcoming original manuscripts. We are also looking for book reviewers. New CASID executive members

Dear CASID members and sympathisers,

I am writing to inform you that after we sent out a call for nominations in late April for the executive committee we received two nominations. Given that there were only two positions open, we decided not to hold elections.

It is my great pleasure to annonce that the two new members of the CASID executive committee are:

John Cameron - member at large -- John is currently the Chair of the IDS Department at Dalhousie University, where he has been lecturing IDS since 2004 and has also served as undergraduate advisor. His educational background includes....

Liam Swiss - vice president -- is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at Memorial University of Newfoundland. His research and teaching interests include international development, foreign aid, gender, and globalization. He received his Ph.D. in Sociology....

Call for Nominations: CASID Executive Committee

The CASID Executive Committee requests nominations for two positions on the board: Vice-President, and Member-at-Large. Elections will be held via online poll during the month of May via CASID’s website (only currently standing members will be eligible to vote) and the results announced at the Annual General Meeting, to be held during the 2011 CASID Annual Conference at the University of New Brunswick (Fredericton), May 31st to June 2nd.

The CASID Bylaws require that any candidate must be a member in good standing and be of at least 18 years of age. All members in good standing of the Association are encouraged to stand for nomination. We particularly encourage people with experience related to an academic journal to stand for election, because of the change that recently occured in the governance of the Association’s journal, the Canadian Journal of Development Studies. We also encourage francophones to apply, to contribute towards ensuring the quality of the French language journal materials and raising the profile of CASID within francophone international development circles.

Nominees for the Vice President must have already served on the Executive Council (either currently or in the past). The Vice President will normally serve for one year and then become President, also for a one year term, after which s/he can be re-elected. Members-at-large are elected for a three year term.

UPDATE: CASID Annual Conference - (FINAL!) Final Program and List of Special Events

Please find attached the Draft Final Program for this year's CASID meeting in Fredericton. You will note that of the 28 panels and roundtables, slightly more than half require a chair/discussant. Please look over the program and if you are willing to serve as a chair/discussant get in touch with me as soon as possible.

Note: we are not expecting formal 'discussant' roles at this year's panel. In our experience, the 'discussant' ends up being an extra paper and eats into discussion time. Rather, what we are looking for is a panel Chair with a keen ear who will act as a catalyst in the discussion and offer some constructive insight to our younger presenters.

Also attached is a list of three special events: this year's keynote speaker is Roy Sesana, the 2005 Right Livelihood Award recipient. In keeping with the theme of indigenous knowledge/rights, we look forward to having Mr. Sesana with us. As some of you know, he has long led the struggle for bushman's rights in the Kalahari.

There are also two films to be shown, so offering a different twist on previous conferences. We hope you are as excited about the meeting (and the venue -- Fredericton in June!) as we are.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Larry A. Swatuk, PhD, Associate Professor
CASID 2011 Conference Coordinator
